Amory Lovins: A 40-year plan for energy

During 2009-11, Rocky Mountain Institute undertook an ambitious "grand synthesis" of what to do about energy—in a U.S. context but adaptable to many other societies. This philanthropically funded $6-million effort engaged 61 of RMI's staff over six quarters, with considerable help from industry in both content and peer-review. Its findings are detailed in a business book, Reinventing Fire: Bold Business Solutions for the New Energy Era, published in September 2011 by Chelsea Green, and further supported at a new website, which also describes RMI's sectoral implementing initiatives and how you can help. This 27-minute TED talk by the study's senior author—RMI's Chairman and Chief Scientist, Amory Lovins—was recorded in March 2012 in TED's New York City studio and posted in May 2012 at TED.com. It clearly and concisely summarizes Reinventing Fire's conclusions about how the U.S. can get completely off oil and coal by 2050, $5 trillion cheaper, with no Act of Congress, led by business for profit.
