There are different types of biofuels as well as processes to create them. We assumed the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s 2002 nominal corn-stover cellulosic ethanol process as the basis for processing biofuels for the transportation sector. This entirely biomass-fueled process yields 49% ethanol and 28 MW electricity (56% exportable). Major savings of energy and capital found in 2007 from potential design improvements (Reinventing Fire, p. 276, n. 390) were conservatively not adopted here.
