Making autos lighter-weight is the key to brisk performance and agile handling with less propulsive power. A 50% gain in powertrain efficiency cuts the needed power by 33%, but 50% lighter mass cuts the needed power by 50%. Yet today’s two-ton steel autos need such powerful engines to accelerate them that the engine uses only a few percent of its full potential power in the city. This mismatch roughly halves the engine’s efficiency.
