Value of U.S. transportation sector savings, 2010–2050

Transitioning to a more efficient transportation system by 2050 will cost, all told, $2 trillion dollars in 2010 present value, but will save $5.8 trillion. Autos save about $4 trillion (NPV), trucks $0.8 trillion, and planes $0.1 trillion. This includes the cost of building the distribution infrastructure needed to support a fleet of autos running on a mix of electricity and hydrogen, less avoided investments in domestic oil supply.
