Half of the typical American’s expenditures are on housing (34%) and transportation (16%). Food, personal insurance, healthcare, entertainment, and apparel make up another 40%. Housing expenditures are primarily for shelter (21% of the total), with furnishings, electricity, telephone, operations, and fuel and water comprising the other 13%. Electricity, natural gas, and fuel oil are ~4% of consumer expenditures, or ~$2,000 per year.
