Rocky Mountain Institute is seeking a Principal who can lead RMI’s international research and collaboration (R&C) efforts, with a particular focus on China. The successful individual will be capable of driving a diverse portfolio of projects that includes technical, policy, and market-focused elements, with a strong understanding and background in RMI’s four key program areas: buildings, transportation, electricity, and industry.

Our Principals lead research teams and partner with collaborators to develop, pilot, and scale successful solutions to the world’s toughest energy challenges. - Work with senior colleagues to deliver a major research collaboration currently underway (“Reinventing Fire: China”).
- Define strategy and develop operational campaigns that produce follow-on impact related to current major research effort.
- Shape and deliver combined program elements, coordinating small teams to deliver objectives.
- Oversight of teams includes some “roll-up your sleeves” work in nearly all projects, driving thought-leadership and execution through charismatic example.
- Perform business development, including philanthropic fundraising support, government grant management, and direct company fee-for-service project development.
- Develop and enhance Rocky Mountain Institute’s reputation through regular publication, speaking, and external engagement on key topics critical to program success.
- Manage existing and propose future program budgets.
- Support development of team members and Institute through active involvement in leadership activities.
- Effectively communicate activities internally at RMI, including close coordination with other RMI electricity practice Principals and other staff.
- Support Managing Directors in interactions with RMI board.

Education and Experience
- Master degree-equivalent or higher, with significant study of technology (science/engineering), markets (business/finance), and/or international studies (China emphasis) preferred.
- Demonstrated professional experience with one or more of Rocky Mountain Institute’s key knowledge areas: buildings, transportation, electricity, and/or industry.
- 10 years of professional experience in related fields.
- At least 5 years of success working in international markets, with some experience in China.
- Direct management experience developing and managing highly skilled teams with peer-level abilities.
- Experience managing budgets larger than $1MM.
- Familiarity (and preferably fluency) in Mandarin helpful.
The successful candidate will be required to spend significant amounts of time in Colorado and Beijing, with a strong preference that one or the other be the candidate's primary residence."
