Partnering with islands to accelerate their shift to affordable, resilient renewable energy

RMI partners with islands around the world to build more resilient economies.

RMI’s Global Islands Energy Program brings experience gained from engagements with island governments, utilities, regulators, and civil society to solve the toughest energy challenges. Relying on objective methods and data, we work with island partners to develop clean energy pathways tailored to meet national goals and needs, foster energy independence, unlock access to climate finance, and realize a climate-resilient future for all.

Island nations face high electricity costs and fuel volatility

Most islands depend on costly, imported diesel, despite their strong solar and other renewable potential, creating an urgent need and opportunity for resilient, locally powered clean energy systems.

Island Initiatives

The Islands Energy Program is supporting the development of more than 20 projects. We continue to help governments and utilities identify and advance bankable and sustainable renewable energy and energy efficiency projects.

As solar energy expands across hurricane-prone regions, resilience has become central to long-term success. RMI’s Solar Under Storm series brings together years of on-the-ground assessments, engineering analysis, and industry collaboration to better understand how solar PV systems perform during extreme weather and how this infrastructure can be strengthened.

RMI’s Energy Transition Academy helps build local capacity, strengthens skills, and supports island practitioners advancing resilient, clean energy systems.

RMI’s Climate Finance Access Network in the Caribbean and the Pacific builds local capacity, embeds finance expertise, and helps island nations unlock and scale climate investment for resilient energy projects.

The Caribbean Climate Smart Facility (CCSF) is designed to address bankability gaps and catalyze the transition to a fully commercial clean-energy market in the Caribbean, including overseas territories.
