Mark Dyson

Mark is a Manager with RMI's electricity practice. Mark's work focuses on characterizing the technical and economic factors important in improving electric utility planning for the distribution edge, including distributed resource interconnection, resource operational modeling, and rate design. Mark has been involved with RMI in several capacities since 2008.

Mark has worked on several large projects across RMI’s practice areas. Mark was a key part of the team responsible for developing RMI’s in-house electricity analysis software tools and applying them to the Reinventing Fire analysis in 2011. Mark also worked on quantitative analysis for industry collaborations in electric power, building efficiency, and large-scale industrial renewable energy use from 2008-2011, including RMI’s work with Duke Energy and H-E-B grocery stores. In addition to these collaborations Mark has also helped lead RMI’s work in demand response and renewable energy integration.

Background

Prior to re-joining RMI in 2014, Mark worked at Ascend Analytics, helping deploy enterprise software for dispatch optimization and financial modeling to several large utilities and other energy companies. At Ascend, Mark worked extensively on modeling the financial and physical risk mitigation properties of renewable energy compared to fossil-fired generation, and incorporating this analysis into a major utility’s integrated resource plan and related regulatory proceedings.

Mark has also held research internships at the National Renewable Energy Lab, working on improving regional electricity system planning optimization models, and Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, working on analysis of the potential for demand response programs to provide ancillary services.

Before joining RMI in 2008, Mark worked at Harvard University and Carleton College as a geophysics researcher focusing on earthquake analysis.
