The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA), Office of Federal High Performance Green Buildings (OFHPGB) and the Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) have launched an effort to enhance and increase the usage of Energy Savings Performance Contracts (ESPCs) on GSA buildings. Rocky Mountain Institute and GSA convened a workshop in 2011 in order to examine the existing ESPC structure and process, and identify improvements to unlock the possibility of deep savings and eventual net zero ESPCs. New Buildings Institute (NBI) is working collaboratively with commercial building stakeholders—building professionals, utilities, and governments—to overcome barriers to energy efficiency, including promoting technologies, design practices, public policies and programs that improve energy efficiency. A current NBI focus is on enabling deep energy savings in commercial buildings that are less than 50 thousand square feet. Visit
The Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance is developing an Existing Building Renewal initiative to help building tenants, managers, and owners conduct whole-building deep energy efficiency retrofits of existing buildings. Visit
The Natural Resources Defense Council is driving a tenant demonstration project with support from Johnson Controls Inc., Jones Lang LaSalle, and Goldman Sachs. The three-year project, which is part of the Clinton Global Initiative Commitment Program, is expected to grow demand for tenant improvement projects that are more sustainable. Visit
The Institute for Building Efficiency is an initiative of Johnson Controls Inc. providing analysis of practices, policies, and technologies for low-energy buildings around the world. Visit
LessEn is an Urban Land Institute (ULI) initiative to encourage better energy efficiency in commercial buildings, with a focus on driving demand among tenants and occupants. Visit
Part of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the Preservation Green Lab explores and analyzes the value that older and historic buildings bring to communities, and provides policy advice for capturing that value. Visit
The Better Buildings Initiative is to accelerate investment in energy efficiency in the private sector and make commercial and industrial buildings 20% more energy efficient by 2020. Visit
2030 Districts are collaborative efforts to meet the energy, water and vehicle emissions targets called for by Architecture 2030, a non-profit organization driven to achieve a dramatic reduction in the climate-change-causing greenhouse gas emissions of the Building Sector. Taking shape across the United States, the 2030 Districts represent property owners and managers coming together with local governments, businesses, and community stakeholders to provide a business model for urban sustainability.
