Rocky Mountain Institute is often called a think tank. In our research, we address pragmatic designs, practices, and policies, not social theories or laboratory experiments. We've invented and extensively modeled a new vehicle design concept that has the potential to save more oil than OPEC sells. Our position papers have reframed the debates on energy and climate change, helping avoid billions of dollars in unwise investments. We've proposed a pioneering strategy for hastening the shift to a clean energy system based on hydrogen, and developed new engineering and architectural techniques that dramatically improve the human, environmental, and financial performance of buildings.
