RMIQ logoRMI will be holding three of its informative RMIQ lectures on the Front Range.

"RMIQ" (Rocky Mountain Institute's Quest for solutions) lectures will take place on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday (October 22, 23, and 24) in Boulder, Denver, and Fort Collins, respectively. RMI Senior Consultants Jeff Ronning and Michael Ogburn and Fellow Heidi Hauenstein will lead a panel discussion about automobile and truck design and climate change.

The three researchers and their guests will describe recent findings on making cars and trucks much more fuel efficient through improvements in aerodynamics, "lightweighting", plug-in hybrid electric vehicle design, and long-haul truck trailer redesign.

"For example, if just half the United States' 2.6 million Class-8 trucks were given a 'simple' package of fuel-saving devices (idle-reduction devices, efficient tires, and aerodynamic kits), their owners and/or operators could save 2.9 billion gallons of diesel a year and greenhouse-gas emissions from the fleet would be reduced by 30 million metric tons annually," noted Ogburn. "That's the same as taking 170,000 trucks off the road."

Ronning, Ogburn, Hauenstein, and their guests will also discuss how making vehicles more fuel-efficient will impact passenger safety, and policy recommendations to encourage market adoption of fuel-efficient vehicles.
