Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) is looking for an experienced Communications writing and editing professional to work full time with our Built Environment Team (BET).
Rocky Mountain Institutes Built Environment Team transforms the built environment into a sustainable and regenerative global ecology. Were an international leader in the green building industry and serve as both consultants and a conceptual think-tank to enhance collaboration between all aspects of the built environment and facilitate implementation of sustainable high-performance solutions through collaborative integrated design. With expertise in energy efficiency, daylighting, and the LEED rating system, weve contributed to the design of hundreds of successful projects throughout the world that span diverse climates and building types.
RMI is in the process of updating our Communications and Media Department. We are increasing our web presence, upping our commitment to PR and Media placements for our professionals and their stories, and launching a world-class RMI Solutions Journals to speak to our donors and supporters about our ideas and our work.
This Communications Specialist will be embedded in the BET team. He or she will report to the VP of Communications and Media, but will also work closely with the Director of Marketing, the Director of Web Content and Strategy, and the PR and Internal Communications Manager. In addition, this Communications Specialist will work closely with the Senior Management of BET.
Responsibilities will include:
- Coordinate with our Senior VP of BET on his proposed book entitled: Cool Buildings for a Cooler Planet. The book is currently in outline form, but needs a real writer to carry it to the next level. Depending on the person hired, the actual authorship of the book could become part of the job description.
- Responsible for tracking all BET projects and initiatives, and will identify, generate, and follow-up on story/PR related ideas for the team. Once tracked, defining all BET stories that can be identified for RMIs Communications outlets: Web, PR and Media, Intranet, RMI Solutions Journal, etc.
- Serve as the point person for any Communications related requests for the team
- After pitching story ideas, will be primary writer for all BET stories and will provide web story/content pieces each week.
- Assign and manage Communications requests for media engagements, blogs, journal contributions etc in co-ordination with Web Director, PR Director, Marketing Director and VP of Communications.
- Gather and assign materials and tasks for our Intranet, Journal and other Communications publications.
- Update and oversee accuracy of content of the team website in co-ordination with Web Director.
- Identify and coordinate Communications role (ie. Deliverables, milestones etc) in team's proposals, grant requests and others in conjunction with the Director of Marketing. Will track all milestones of projects with the BET project managers, especially those that pertain to COMMS deliverables and are part of documenting and communicating the project.
- Identify Comms role and PR/media opportunities in all BET projects and research.
Qualifications should include:
- Exceptional written and oral communications skills and analytical abilities.
- Experience in team-based work, and demonstrated passion for RMI's mission.
- Minimum BA in journalism or creative writing sought. At least five years experience in the field with multiple examples of published writing samples.
- Experience in book proposals would be a plus, and of course any actual published book would be a great advantage. Must be equally adept at writing for traditional journals and web outlets.
- Experience in writing and editing technical information to a variety of audiences.
This position is for a nine or twelve month appointment with the possibility of extension or evolution into a full time position within RMI. Compensation is based on experience and full participation in RMI's benefits plan is included. The position is located at the RMI facility in Boulder, Colorado.
