FULL-TIME POSITIONSVice President of Development
In our first twenty-five years we’ve created an impact on the world far beyond our numbers or resources. We stand on the threshold of even greater accomplishments on an even larger scale. Our plan for deepening our impact on the world calls for major, sustained efforts over the next five years. These world-changing initiatives will require imagination and funding on a large scale, both from current and new sources. Our development programs will drive these efforts.
The Vice President of Development reports to the Executive Director of Strategic Development and is a member of the Executive Leadership Team, fully participating in its deliberations, decisions and overall management of the Institute, and acting as a senior advisor to the CEO and to the Board.
The Vice President of Development leads a team of professionals and support staff in designing and executing all aspects of Rocky Mountain Institute’s fundraising activities. The key elements of these programs are:
- Design and implement innovative strategic development programs to support long-term, major impact programs.
- Concrete and aggressive strategies for a comprehensive development program with long-term viability. The program includes major donors, foundations, planned giving,bevents and outreach.
Our Requirements. This position requires a person of exceptional vision, ability and experience. Among the individual attributes are:
- Strategic Thinking. You must be able to think on a large-scale and still work the details to produce the best result.
- Strong Producer. High dollar volume to support major initiatives and the Institute’s growth. Major fundraising experience at a high level in scope, significance, and dollar value.
- Content Knowledge. Direct or directly applicable experience and understanding of technical and scientific subject matter related to RMI’s work and mission.
- Leadership. Extraordinary leadership and management skills.
- Mission-driven. Understanding of and passion for RMI’s mission.

Special Fellowship Office of the Chief Scientist
Amory Lovins is co-founder and chief scientist of RMI. He is among the world's leading experts and innovators in the interlinked fields of energy, resources, environment, development, and security. He works chiefly with senior business, government, military and other thought leaders, both in the US and worldwide.
This fellowship presents a unique opportunity to combine a variety of substantive and experiential activities and challenges while working directly with Amory. The work will require the Fellow to understand the substance of Amory's diverse activities and the mission of the Institute and play an important role in moving this work forward.
The Fellow will participate as a team member in research and consulting projects being conducted at RMI, especially (but not exclusively) projects run by the VP of the Office of the Chief Scientist.
In addition the Fellow will
- Conduct special research projects for Amory

Manage Amory's public email communication

Manage incoming queries from outside parties

Host and facilitate meetings for strategically important guests and partners

Travel with Amory when needed to provide logistical and substantive support.

Assist Amory during innovation workshops with clients.

Assist with follow-up work and contacts resulting from Amory's outside engagements.
Qualifications include exceptional written and oral communications skills, analytical abilities, experience in team-based work, and demonstrated passion for RMI's mission. Management, economics, environmental policy, and law backgrounds are welcome as long as the candidate also has an extremely strong analytical / quantitative background. The most successful candidate will be able to work equally well with "soft" and
"hard" information and analysis, and to combine qualitative and quantitative data into compelling documents, presentations and conclusions. Language skills, travel experience, and diverse interests are a plus.
This fellowship is for a nine or twelve month appointment with the possibility of extension or evolution into another position within RMI. Compensation is a stipend of $2,000 per month, housing, and participation in RMI's benefits plan. The position is located at the RMI facility in Old Snowmass, Colorado.

RMI offers three-month to one-year internships, depending on the needs of the project and the funding available. Any of the departments at RMI may request funding for a project-related internship at any time during the calendar year. Competition for these positions is intense. In most cases, candidates will be required to have at least a BA or BS, be able to demonstrate effective interpersonal and communications skills, have broad interest in environmental and resource policy issues, and have a desire to apply these interests to practical, real-life situations. Related work experience is a plus. Interns are expected to be self-motivated and require minimal supervision. Applicants must be able to function effectively in an unusual work environment, including flexible work hours and a communal work area.
Duties and activities of our interns will vary with the project needs and the intern's ability and interests. Responsibilities may include research and writing, technical analysis, general office work (responding to information requests, maintaining the library and resource files and databases, copying, etc.), giving tours, or work on the RMI physical facility (upkeep of the communal kitchen, grounds, greenhouse, etc.).
RMI has two offices — in Boulder, Colorado and in Snowmass, Colorado. RMI's Boulder offices are located in downtown Boulder, and have excellent access to local amenities, services, and public transportation. RMI's Snowmass offices are in a rural area 180 miles southwest of Denver, 25 miles from I-70 and twelve miles from the Aspen airport. The nearest public transportation is 2.5 miles away and the area has limited amenities and services.
