Energy Efficiency Optimization

wind turbinesRMI’s Energy & Resources Services Team provides a comprehensive suite of services for commercial energy users, facility owners and operators, and real estate developers, as well as efficiency and resource-planning consulting for energy service providers. Our staff analyzes energy flows within a process, building, or organization, and recommends an integrated package of retrofits or design criteria that not only optimize efficiency but also lower capital and operating costs, increase performance, and enhance productivity. Services fall into three general categories:

  • Facility design and/or renovation — applying advanced technologies and innovative design techniques to building envelope, lighting, HVAC, and other issues.
  • Processes and products — enhancing efficiency through quick-payback measures (such as motor replacement and thermal integration) and longer-term, strategic shifts (such as process, product, and organizational redesign).
  • Demand-side management (DSM) — instituting programs that fully capture and value demand-side energy efficiency's many advantages.

Distributed Resources Guidance

Efficient new technologies for small-scale, decentralized (onsite) electricity generation and storage offer exciting business opportunities for traditional utilities, energy service providers, and commercial energy users alike. World leaders in this fast-emerging field, our consultants help clients assess needs, available technologies, markets, and the economics of distributed resources.

Hydrogen and Fuel-Cell Commercialization

Research & Consulting staff members have long experience with, and access to, large corporations making substantial investments in this rapidly evolving market. They advise clients on integrating fuel cells into new products and services, market analysis, commercialization strategies, and technology acquisition.

Emerging Energy Markets Advice

Our consultants help energy service providers understand the rapidly changing energy marketplace to position themselves for entry into new markets in unique and profitable ways. These new market opportunities include "green energy" products, niche markets for renewable energy sources, and integrated energy commodity and service products, as well as no-regrets transitional strategies for traditional suppliers.

Strategic Planning and Analysis

Our experts offer extensive project consulting services in energy markets and strategy, as well as business plan development, market assessment, investment risk analysis, and critical path planning. The team can also assist clients in energy and environmental regulatory issues and in tailoring business decisions to anticipate evolving regulations.

Utility Restructuring Assistance

Our legal and regulatory experts help clients operate successfully within the dynamics of open and competitive energy markets, and implement business strategies for anticipating changing circumstances.
